SHEEHAN’S SYNDROME: A CASE REPORT

Abstract

Sheehan Syndrome or Post-partum pituitary infarction occurs due to postpartum haemorrhage, leading to panhypopitu- itarism. Occurs especially after massive blood loss during or after delivery. Postpartum bleeding leads to hypovolaemia and shock, causing anterior pituitary gland necrosis. This damage can reduce the gland’s ability to produce hormones, im- pacting milk production, menstrual cycles, and metabolism. Symptoms can be acute or chronic depending on the extent of the damage. We report a case of a 30-year-old woman who presented with generalized swelling, shortness of breath on exertion, weakness, amenorrhoea, and failure to lactate following a previous delivery complicated by severe postpartum haemorrhage requiring intensive care and multiple blood transfusions. Hormonal investigations showed low pituitary hor- mone levels, and an MRI of the brain confirmed the diagnosis of Sheehan’s syndrome. The patient was started on hormone replacement therapy with prednisolone and thyroxine, leading to appropriate management of her condition.
