Predicting Conception: The Endometriosis Fertility Index as a Tool for Optimizing Reproductive Health

Abstract

Endometriosis affects a significant proportion of infertile women, posing challenges for fertility prognosis and management. The accurate prediction of fertility outcomes and the formulation of appropriate treatment plans are crucial in managing these patients. The Endometriosis Fertility Index (EFI) has emerged as a valuable tool in this regard, incorporating both historical, clinical and laparoscopic parameters to assess the likelihood of achieving pregnancy following surgical intervention. This prospective study aimed to assess the feasibility and accuracy of the Endometriosis Fertility Index (EFI) in predicting fertility outcomes in women undergoing laparoscopy for endometriosis-related infertility. 73 infertile or sub fertile women who underwent laparoscopy due to suspected endometriosis between August 2019 and December 2021 were included in the study. Demographic data, EFI scores, and fertility outcomes were analyzed and the participants were followed up for two years post-surgery. Analysis of pregnancy outcomes based on EFI scores revealed that women with lower EFI scores were more likely to conceive through ART than spontaneous conception.

Our findings suggest that EFI score serves as valuable prognostic indicator, influencing the mode of fertility treatment and improving reproductive outcomes. This study underscores the importance of incorporating EFI scores into clinical practice to optimize fertility management strategies for women with endometriosis-related infertility.
