Chhaya: Unique Need- Oriented Birth Control Pills

Abstract

Chhaya (Drug name: Centchroman) is a non steroidal, non –hormonal birth control pill. It is administered orally and is being used to provide contraception since 1991. In 2017, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare expanded basket of oral contraceptive choices by launching Chhaya in 10 states of India. It is highly effective with Pearl Index comparable to other birth control pills. Centchroman has not shown teratogenicity and has less frequent administration compared to other available hormonal oral contraceptive pills. It is safe for breast feeding women, can be prescribed immediately after delivery.
