Interest in subclinical and overt hypothyroidism (OH) has increased over the past few years as it affects neurodevelopment in the offspring and can cause adverse effects on pregnancy outcome. This has led to many health organization , societies and public groups to recommend routine thyroid screening in pregnancy. Though the effects of overt hypothyroidism on pregnancy is well known and replacement therapy is advocated, yet controversy exists about the effects of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and its need for treatment in pregnancy.
