Abstract

Abstract

Zika virus is an arbovirus whose main vector is Aedes species. It occurs in all trimesters of pregnancy. The main symptoms are fever, mucopurulent rash, conjunctivitis and arthralgia. Zika virus infection in pregnancy has been linked with microcephaly, ventricular calcification etc. Diagnosis is by virology or serology. There is no vaccine or specific treatment for Zika virus infection. Treatment is only supportive. Infection in pregnancy can be associated with increased incidence of miscarriage, IUGR and stillbirth. Best way to prevent infection is avoidance of travel to endemic areas during pregnancy and use of preventive measures to avoid mosquito bite.
